武夷四曲的大藏峰，是一处稀世佳景。峰顶云飘荡，崖前树影寒。几处藤萝牵又扯，满溪瑶草夹香兰。风飘飘，水潺潺，时闻幽鸟语相关。
相传当年太上老君曾在此峰顶以巨石为壁，楠木做栏，搭了间仙牛栏，放养一头独角犀牛，太上老君嘱咐犀牛曰：“孽畜!饿了就吃这峰顶千年草。吃完了放你回天。尔胆敢造次，将性命难保。”千年草细长青翠，仙牛边吃它边长，怎么也吃不完。
话说有一年春天，仙牛见牛栏外春光明媚，陡崖前茶绿花香。夭桃迷翡翠，嫩柳闪黄鹂。仙牛想溜下峰去。无奈身不由己，只得怒向千年仙草大发雷霆：“全是你这该死的仙草作梗，害得老牛下不了山。”仙牛摇身一变，变成一只黑乎乎的双角妖牛。头如峻岭，眼若深潭;两个角，似两座铁塔;连头到尾，有千余丈长短，自蹄至背，有八百丈高下。可妖牛刚窜出牛栏，后蹄便被千年草紧紧缠住。它奋力一挣，竟把千年仙草连片拔起，甩到崖壁上的洞罅里去了。
妖牛窜下山，不顾嫦娥仙女相劝，不理云锦仙子苦求。它一到稻田就边吃边踏，把方圆数百里的稻田全折腾完了。
乡民下地耕田时，一看稻田便傻了眼，气得纷纷举锄提棍向妖牛扑去。谁知那妖牛将头一低，喝声“长!”长得身高万丈，头如泰山，眼如日月，口似血池，牙似门扇。妖牛更加野性十足地钻进茶园，把一丛丛未采的春茶糟踏得枝断叶落。庄稼和茶园是武夷百姓的命根子哪，如今全给妖牛糟踏精光，日后靠什么过活啊?乡民们大怒，不顾性命的与妖牛厮杀起来。
那妖牛被众人追杀，更是撒泼，剪尾蹦蹄闯进村去，光耀耀的两只铁角，往来抵触;南一撞，北一撞。一时间，但见柳折花伤，林摧树倒。壁损墙崩，梁摇柱撼，大有地裂山崩之势。霎那间哭声、喊声直冲霄汉，惊动九重天宫的太上老君。
太上老君拔云一看，见是他那头犀牛在伤生造孽，惊呼：“造化低了!”太上老君怒拔宝剑，按下云头，厉声喝道：“孽畜，拿性命来!”
妖牛猛然一惊，听得是太上老君，吓得抽身奔逃。才窜到九曲溪滨，只见前方白光一闪，太上老君横剑挡住了去路。妖牛仓惶之际，又见四面八方都是愤怒的乡民，真个似罗网高张。妖牛自知性命难保，便一头栽进水里。太上老君见这孽畜罪不可恕，不除它只恐后患无穷。他挥剑往下一指，捻诀念咒，只见亮光一闪，那妖牛立时被点化成一块顽石，脑袋栽在水里，再也抬不起来了。
时至今日，游人乘筏漂游九曲时，还可以看到妖牛那露在水面上的两个牛角和一截脖子哩!后人称它为“仙牛石”或“牛角石”，把那弯深潭叫作“仙牛潭”或“牛角潭”。至于那被妖牛甩进罅洞里的仙草，却千年不坏，万载生光;风吹不朽，雨打不烂，人们叫它“千年草”。
